October is in the shoulder season for Sabah and a wonderful month to visit, offering warm tropical weather, less crowds, great diving conditions, and comfortable sea temperatures. The chances of seeing a hammerhead are increased in October.
Sipadan - 15 to 30 metres, great for schooling fish
Mabul & Kapalai - 5 to 15 metres, great for macro
29 – 30°C water temperature
Calm to moderately choppy
Occasional wind & light chop but it rarely disrupts diving
Warm, tropical days around 31°C with sunshine, scattered clouds, and brief showers.
Rain typically falls in short bursts, often late afternoon or evening, allowing time for activities and relaxation.
Globally renowned for towering walls, abundant turtles, and schooling pelagics such as chevron barracuda and jacks. Frequent reef sharks with seasonal chances for hammerheads in deeper blue water.
Barracuda Point: Iconic site ranked among the world’s best; famous for the swirling “barracuda tornado,” big schools of jacks, numerous turtles, and reef sharks. Often a brisk drift ending in a shallow coral garden.
The Drop-Off: Legendary vertical wall plunging hundreds of metres; sponges, fans and reef life with turtles and reef sharks patrolling the edge.
South Point: Pelagic hotspot with eagle rays, reef sharks and occasional hammerhead encounters when conditions align.
Hanging Gardens: Soft-coral ledges and gorgonian fans cascading down the wall; reef fish and macro subjects along the terraces.
Turtle Cavern / Turtle Tomb: Cave system known for historic turtle remains; for appropriately trained/qualified divers only with suitable conditions and guide protocols.
Turtle Patch: High turtle density; reports of bumphead parrotfish and occasional thresher/hammerhead sightings.
According to Scuba Junkie’s published hammerhead‑season data, October is one of the two peak months for spotting hammerheads at Sipadan. Their logs recorded:
October 2023: 269 hammerhead sightings
October 2022 & 2024: Lower numbers, but still “consistent presence”
This indicates that hammerheads are regularly seen in October, although the exact numbers vary year to year based on conditions such as currents and visibility.
While no operator guarantees sightings, October is regarded as one of the best times of the year for hammerhead encounters at Sipadan due to cooler currents and seasonal patterns that bring them close to the reef slopes. Based on historical data, divers visiting in October have a strong chance—often considered among the highest in the year.
Shallow sloping reefs and sandy patches packed with rare critters—ideal for macro photography and night dives.
Paradise I & II: House-reef style sites renowned for ghost pipefish, frogfish, sea moths, juvenile cuttlefish and ribbon eels
Lobster Wall: Mix of wall and macro with lobsters, nudibranchs, sea fans (look for pygmy seahorses), stonefish and scorpionfish.
Eel Garden: Large colonies of garden eels, plus morays, mantis shrimp, gobies and frogfish on gentle sandy slopes.
Crocodile Avenue: Calm, shallow muck site noted for sea moths, pipefish, nudibranchs and rays resting in the sand.
A sandbank with rich critter life supported by natural habitat and artificial structures—perfect for slow, detail-focused dives.
Mandarin Valley: Famed for mandarinfish (dusk displays), jawfish, crocodilefish, ghost pipefish and frogfish—macro photographer favourite.
Kapalai Jetty (House Reef): Right beneath the resort: schools of reef fish, nudibranchs, pipefish and blue-ringed octopus can appear.
Gurnard Point: Shallow sandy site with blue-spotted rays, morays, dragonets, boxfish and batfish; relaxed conditions.
Spotted Ray Channel: Rays, gobies, shrimp pairs and scattered bommies; gentle depth profile ideal for long critter hunts.
Artificial Reefs: Metal frames, sunken boats and structures that host frogfish, octopus, leaf scorpionfish and flamboyant cuttlefish.
